Description
Relief Duty Manager – London Gatwick (LGW)
Aurigny Air Services
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Relief Duty Manager to join our team at London Gatwick Airport.
Supporting the Station Manager and Duty Managers, this role is central to the day-to-day running of the station, ensuring operations remain safe, punctual and cost-effective while delivering a high standard of customer service.
As Gatwick is a self-handling station, the Relief Duty Manager provides direct operational oversight of Aurigny’s in-house ramp and dispatch teams, ensuring all activities comply fully with the Ground Operations Manual (GOM) and the Safety Management System (SMS).
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Ramp Safety
You will supervise ramp and dispatch teams to ensure safe, efficient aircraft turnarounds and strict compliance with operational procedures. This includes overseeing the safe use of Ground Support Equipment (GSE), conducting operational audits and spot checks, and ensuring all activities meet company safety standards. You will also oversee third-party ground handling services where Aurigny holds the contract, such as Skybus operations.
Disruption Management
During irregular operations, you will play a key role in managing disruption, acting as the on-shift decision maker. Working closely with the Gatwick Control Centre, airport authorities and partner agencies, you will coordinate operational responses including de-controlling flights, cancellations and passenger welfare arrangements such as accommodation, transport and meal vouchers.
Customer Service
You will support Front of House and Back of House teams to ensure passengers receive a professional and efficient service. The role includes handling escalated customer queries and complaints with empathy and professionalism, while ensuring compliance with Gatwick’s Silent Airport policy for passenger communications.
Systems & Administration
You will ensure all flights are correctly processed within the Departure Control System (DCS) and maintain accurate operational data across airport systems including Gatwick FIDS. Responsibilities also include completing shift reports, operational handovers and delay reporting, as well as managing on-the-day staffing issues such as sickness cover and shift changes.
Leadership & Team Support
As a senior operational presence on shift, you will provide leadership and guidance to the station team, assist with staff training and development, and represent Aurigny at operational meetings when required.
About You
You will have previous experience in an airline or ground handling supervisory role, with a strong understanding of ramp safety, aviation security and operational compliance. Experience using Altea or a similar DCS system is desirable.
You will also bring excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to remain calm and effective in a fast-paced operational environment.
