Our mission is to help children and young people have a fair chance to be who they want to be. We do this by providing a safe home, increasing life skills and self-confidence, and improving emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The YMCA DownsLink Group Family Mediation Service aims to avert young people away from crisis point by providing an effective and proactive mediation and re-engagement programme, with providing a safe space to talk and work through issues.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Family Support Mediator to join a Brighton and Hove City Council commissioned service working with 14–25-year-olds who are at risk of homelessness due to conflict or relationship breakdown in the family home.

You will be part of a dynamic team delivering innovative frontline services to young people at the Youth Advice Centre in Brighton. In delivering the role, you will provide face to face mediation sessions with young people and their families and crisis intervention support with young people at the Youth Advice Centre. You will also provide parenting support and guidance.

In addition, you will be working alongside and collaborating with team members to provide a homelessness prevention pathway. You will deliver a high-quality service that enables clients to overcome the barriers they face and manage the difficulties they experience.

ABOUT YOU: We know that there are great candidates who will not fit everything described, or who have important skills we have not mentioned. If that is you, please do not hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are looking for someone who has experience of mediation and/or conflict coaching, or similar work across a range of client groups. You will have experience of working with young people with mental health issues and learning difficulties, and young people and their families / carers in crisis. You will be able to relate to young people with varying needs, along with advocating for young people and parents/guardians and other agencies.

You will be an effective communicator, assertive and be able to deal with conflict when necessary. You will have awareness and knowledge of issues facing young people, especially those who are socially excluded or from hard-to-reach groups.

In addition, you will have a good understanding of a range of appropriate therapeutic intervention models and a robust understanding of both child and adult safeguarding legislation and practice.
