About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Refugee and Migrant Centre, a well-established and award-winning charity dedicated to supporting refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable migrants. RMC’s mission is to break down barriers to integration and empower individuals to achieve equal citizenship through holistic support services.
As a Health Inclusion Officer, you will play a key role in promoting the health and wellbeing of asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants. You will provide advice, advocacy, and group-based interventions to empower individuals to access appropriate healthcare, understand their rights and entitlements, and improve their mental health and overall wellbeing.
This role offers a chance to make a real difference to the lives of people who are often excluded from mainstream health services. You will work within a committed and supportive team, collaborating closely with internal colleagues and external health and community partners.
The position is a fixed-term contract until March 2026, with an immediate start. The role is based at the Birmingham office, with travel required across Birmingham and the Black Country, including outreach work in hotels accommodating asylum seekers.
Purpose and Scope of the Role
· To support asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to access healthcare, improve health literacy, and enhance mental health and wellbeing.
· To deliver group workshops and one-to-one support sessions focused on mental health awareness, the Five Ways to Wellbeing, and practical navigation of the NHS.
· To contribute to the development and delivery of RMC’s health inclusion programmes, ensuring culturally sensitive, high-quality, and person-centred services.
· To uphold RMC’s professional and organisational standards in all health-related service delivery.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
Individual Support and Advocacy
· Support clients to register with GP surgeries and other Primary Care providers, and to understand how and when to access appointments, free prescriptions, and the NHS App.
· Provide tailored one-to-one advice and advocacy for clients experiencing physical or mental health challenges, ensuring they can navigate healthcare systems effectively.
· Raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing, including available support and how to seek help.
· Offer crisis intervention and emotional support where necessary, making timely referrals to external health or mental health services.
· Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all client interactions.
Health Education and Group Work
· Deliver or facilitate group workshops and wellbeing sessions in hotels housing asylum seekers and other community settings.
· Promote health education on topics such as accessing NHS services, disease prevention, mental health awareness, and healthy living.
· Develop and distribute multilingual materials to improve health literacy within the community.
Programme Development and Partnership Working
· Work collaboratively with the Regional Health and Wellbeing Manager and other RMC staff to plan, deliver, and evaluate health inclusion activities.
· Build and maintain effective relationships with external healthcare providers, local authorities, and community organisations.
· Represent RMC at external meetings and promote partnership working across the region.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
· Keep accurate, up-to-date records of all client interactions, group sessions, and outcomes in accordance with RMC’s data protection and confidentiality policies.
· Contribute to project monitoring, evaluation, and reporting for funders and management.
· Identify trends, gaps, and emerging needs to inform future service development.
Essential Criteria
· Experience of supporting asylum seekers, refugees, or vulnerable migrants, ideally within a health, wellbeing, or advice context.
· Understanding of the UK healthcare system and the barriers faced by migrants in accessing services.
· Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex health information clearly and sensitively.
· Empathy and cultural awareness, with the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
· Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage a varied workload.
· Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of work.
Desirable Criteria
· Experience delivering group work, workshops, or community-based health programmes.
· Knowledge of mental health promotion, wellbeing strategies, or the Five Ways to Wellbeing framework.
· Ability to speak one or more community languages.
· Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as health, social care, psychology, or community development.
· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
