Description
Drumgrange is seeking an experienced and collaborative Mechanical Engineer to join our inclusive team. Based in either of our Portland or Chertsey offices, this role offers hybrid working (dependant on the classification of project data) and the opportunity to work at one of the most adaptable and reactive engineering companies within the UK defence sector. The successful candidate will contribute to the Cradle to Grave lifecycle of product development, working within our skilled project and manufacturing teams to supply high-quality products and systems to the Defence Industry.
As a qualified Mechanical Engineer, you will be experienced in 3D design software and generation of 2D drawings to appropriate standards, with a good appreciation of user interface functionality and external factors, and awareness of common materials and manufacturing method selection considerations. This role is created to meet deadlines on a high-profile project which requires time management and strong communication as well as a broad awareness of reliable, ergonomic design to minimise misuse and damage in some of the most demanding environments.
Reporting to: Senior Engineer (Mechanical Team Lead)
What you’ll do
· Assist and liaise with project teams on mechanical aspects of products and systems. · Design bespoke equipment in accordance with defence standards to benefit the capabilities of the modern-day defence sector. · Select Materials, Manufacturing processes and integration methods to best suit the equipment’s use. · Liaise and provide technical advice to suppliers and internal departments to ensure product is fit for purpose and manufactured to the design intent. · Advise and conduct testing to demonstrate compliance in accordance with Defence and International Standards. · Assist Quality and Production to ensure everything from component to the end product is as per the design intent. · As required, support off-site engineers to problem solve, trouble shoot and assist integration and testing of products and systems. · Ensure all data generated and design decisions taken are in accordance with best practice to ensure traceability. · Comply with all relevant Health and Safety requirements and safe practices and procedures operated by Drumgrange. · Provide meaningful input to design development and reviews to ensure the product is fit for purpose and all opportunities and risk to projects are managed. · Be willing to spend time in different departments as part of holistic approach to learning the business and understanding the many driving factors behind business process. |
What you’ll need
· A relevant Engineering Qualification such as a Level 6 NVQ or Honour’s Degree in a numerate discipline, or equivalent industrial experience. · At least 2 years experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment would be advantageous. · A Level 3 qualification (NVQ 3, Advanced Apprenticeship or AS/A Level) linked to Math and Science (Physics). · Proficiency in English written/spoken, or at least to level B2 in accordance with CEFR. · Evidence of formal training on and experience with CAD software (Inventor preferred). · A competent and methodical working process when using 3D design software (Inventor preferred but not essential) and the ability to create 2D drawings in accordance with BS EN8888 or equivalent standards. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills. · A proven ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously and deliver to challenging timescales within a small team environment. · A passion for practical problem-solving. · Self-motivation with ambitions to learn at any opportunity, seeking improvements to work practices and keen to champion emerging technologies and materials that will benefit the business. · An understanding of the importance of traceability and process when working. · A good knowledge of how to create intuitive modifiable Parts and Assemblies structures, to aid ease of modification. · A grasp of product data management systems (AutoDesk Vault Preferred). · Awareness of JIRA or other similar task monitoring tools. · A fundamental level of understanding of Stress analysis using hand calculations and FEA (Nastran Preferred). · An understanding of Internal Protection (IP) rating for products. · An understanding of the correct applications of GD&T.
