Description
The E&I Design Engineer – Fire & Life Safety Systems is responsible for the engineering design, technical documentation, and design-phase technical support of fire detection, fire alarm, and integrated life‑safety systems across complex industrial projects.
This is a design‑led role, suited to an experienced E&I Engineer with strong expertise in fire systems engineering, standards compliance, and structured design documentation. The role operates primarily during the design and pre‑commissioning phases, supporting project delivery teams through robust, compliant, and well‑controlled engineering outputs.
Projects are typically delivered within life sciences, pharmaceutical, high‑tech manufacturing, and other regulated industrial environments, where safety, compliance, and documentation quality are critical.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Lead and contribute to the design of fire detection and fire alarm systems, ensuring full compliance with I.S. 3218:2024, relevant EN standards, and project‑specific requirements
- Develop, review, and maintain high‑quality engineering design deliverables, including:
- System architectures and layouts
- Wiring diagrams, schematics, and control panel drawings
- Cable schedules, I/O lists, and instrument indexes
- Cause & Effect matrices and system narratives
- Support the integration of fire alarm systems with gas detection, BMS, suppression systems, and other life‑safety or control interfaces
- Review tender documentation, client specifications, and design criteria, translating requirements into practical, compliant, and buildable system designs
- Apply sound engineering judgement to resolve design challenges and interface risks
Project & Technical Support
- Provide design‑phase technical support to Project Managers, site engineers, commissioning teams, and third‑party vendors
- Support FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities from a design, documentation, and compliance perspective
- Respond to RFIs and technical queries during project execution, ensuring alignment with approved design intent
- Participate in internal and external design reviews with clients, consultants, and project stakeholders
- Support change control and design revisions in line with project governance processes
Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare and review engineering documentation including:
- RAMS and design risk assessments
- Commissioning documentation, test scripts, and certification packs
- As‑built drawings and final design records
- Compile and review handover documentation, including O&M manuals and compliance dossiers
- Ensure all design outputs meet regulatory, client, and internal quality standards
- Maintain strong design control, version management, and document traceability throughout the project lifecycle
Required Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree, trade qualification, or equivalent experience in Electrical, Instrumentation, or E&I Engineering

- Strong working knowledge of I.S. 3218:2024 and relevant fire alarm system standards
- Demonstrated experience producing structured engineering design documentation
- High attention to detail with strong written and technical communication skills
- Ability to work independently within a defined design scope while collaborating effectively with project teams
Desirable
- Experience working within life sciences, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, or high‑tech manufacturing environments
- Exposure to VESDA, suppression systems, gas detection, or integrated life‑safety solutions
- Familiarity with BMS, PLCs, or safety control systems
- Experience supporting validated or regulated projects
Key Competencies
- Strong analytical and engineering problem‑solving capability
- Methodical, detail‑oriented approach to design and documentation
- Ability to manage multiple design packages across concurrent projects
- Clear, professional communicator with both internal teams and clients
- Strong understanding of compliance, safety, and regulated environments
