Apprentice Engineer (Electronic Design)

Job Purpose

This role offers hybrid working dependent on the classification of project data and the opportunity to work at one of the most adaptable and reactive engineering companies within the UK defence sector. Whilst undertaking a Level 4/HNC Apprenticeship, validated and delivered by a preferred supplier, we will build up your knowledge and expertise whilst working on live projects and assignments within the Drumgrange organisation.

Working in the test/electronics design team, collaborating with electronic and software engineers primarily, the role will allow for the selected candidate to generate full data packs, build first-of-type products, analyse quality control, conduct testing, and support production in order to ensure the end product meets the customer’s needs.

Developing equipment for robust, safety-critical equipment for military applications in the Land, Maritime, and Underwater domains will require a broad awareness of reliable, ergonomic design to minimise misuse and damage in some of the most demanding environments.

Reporting to: Engineer (Test Team Lead)

What you’ll do

 

·       Undertake a 4 year apprenticeship through a validated preferred supplier as an ‘Engineering Manufacturing Technician.’

·       Assist and liaise with project teams on mechanical aspects of products and systems.

·       Design bespoke equipment i.a.w Defence standards in order to benefit the capabilities of the modern day defence sector.

·       Select Materials, Manufacturing processes and integration methods in order to best suit the equipment’s use.

·       Liaise and provide technical advice to suppliers and internal departments to ensure the product is fit for purpose and manufactured to the design intent.

·       Advise and conduct testing to demonstrate compliance i.a.w Defence and International Standards.

·       Assist Quality and Production to ensure that every component in the end product is fit for purpose and manufactured to the design intent.

·       As required, support off-site engineers to problem solve, troubleshoot and assist in integration and testing of products and systems.

·       Ensure all data generated and design decisions taken are i.a.w best practices to ensure traceability.

·       Comply with all relevant Health and Safety requirements and safe practices and procedures operated by Drumgrange.

·       Provide meaningful input to design development and reviews in order to ensure the product is fit for purpose and all opportunities and risks to projects are managed.

·       Be willing to spend time in different departments as port of a holistic approach to learning the business and understanding the many driving factors behind business processes.

 

What you’ll need

 

·         Demonstrate a good level of verbal and written communication skills.

·         A basic level of competency and methodical working process when using 3D design software (inventor preferred but not essential.)

·         Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously and deliver to challenging timescales within a small team environment.

·         A passion for practical problem-solving.

·         A practical mind-set towards designing user interface functionality and external factors.

·         Self-motivation with ambitions to learn at any opportunity, seeking improvements to work practices and keen to champion emerging technologies and materials that will benefit the business.

·         An understanding of the importance of traceability and process when working.

·         A basic understanding of how to create 2D drawings.

·         A basic knowledge of how to create easily modifiable Parts and Assemblies to aid ease of modification.

·         Awareness of common materials and manufacturing method selection considerations.

·         A minimum of 32 UCAS points (At least one A level at grade C in a relevant STEM subject or equivalent AVCE or National diploma / certificate.)

·         Be proficient in English written / spoken or at least to level B2 i.a.w CEFR.

·         Evidence of familiarity with CAD software, (Inventor preferred.)

·         Must meet the UK Governments eligibility criteria for apprenticeship funding.

·         The ability to obtain and maintain Security Clearance with a minimum of 5 years or permanent residency in the UK.

·         Any previous experience of an Engineering environment in order to understand fundamental principles would be advantageous such as work experience or a product design module.
